One of the most magical elements of photography is natural light — and nowhere is it more enchanting than in the Umbrian countryside. Whether you're shooting the golden glow of sunrise or the soft hues of dusk, understanding how to use natural light can transform your photos from ordinary to extraordinary.

Here are three simple tips to get you started:

  1. Shoot During the Golden HourThe hour just after sunrise and before sunset offers warm, diffused light that adds depth and softness to your images. Plan your shoots around these times for the best results.

  2. Use Shadows CreativelyDon’t shy away from shadows; instead, use them to add contrast and texture. The Umbrian hills and ancient buildings create perfect shadow play — experiment with different angles to capture dramatic effects.

  3. Avoid Harsh Midday SunMidday light can be harsh and create unflattering shadows. If you must shoot then, look for shaded spots or use a diffuser to soften the light on your subject.

Mastering natural light is a key skill we focus on during our workshops — and what better place to practice than the stunning landscapes of Umbria?
