Step into a slower rhythm with our residential photography retreat, based in our beautiful 17th-century farmhouse in the heart of Umbria.
Designed for beginner and intermediate photographers, this relaxed and unhurried course will not only develop your technical skills, but invite you to see the world differently — through fresh perspectives and thoughtful composition.
You’ll learn to get the very best out of your camera, taking it off automatic and unlocking its full potential as you capture some of the finest photographs you’ve ever taken.
You’ll stay as part of the family, sharing home-cooked meals around the table and savoring long lunches in local trattorias. With plenty of time to explore, reflect, learn and create, this is more than a course — it’s a gentle immersion into both photography and the soulful pace of Italian country life.
CASA SUSANNE
You be staying with us at our home. Nestled among olive groves and our small sunlit vineyard, Casa Susanne is a place where time slows and creativity thrives. This is more than just a place to stay—it's a retreat designed for photographers seeking inspiration, connection, and a slower pace of life.
Each day, you'll explore the landscapes, villages, and textures of Umbria through your lens - guided and supported by me. In the evenings, we'll gather over home-cooked meals made with local ingredients and paired with regional wines, and over dinner, under a sky full of stars (or possibly a spectacular thunderstorm) we’ll exchange ideas, review the day's work, and reflect on the lessons learned through the lens.
One unforgetable night you'll even craft your own pizza and bake it in our traditional wood-fired oven—a highlight filled with warmth, laughter, adventure, and in the end, against all odds, delicious pizza!
At other times, whether you're relaxing in the garden with a book, wandering through the vineyard at dusk and catching the golden hour, or simply soaking in the silence, Casa Susanne offers more than a stay - it’s an experience of slow living, shared moments, and lasting memories.

There’s no fixed itinerary — each retreat is shaped around your individual goals, interests, and level of experience, ensuring your time is both meaningful and inspiring.
We’ll explore a variety of beautiful locations off the beaten path, steering clear of the usual tourist spots in favour of quieter, more authentic scenes.
Daily feedback and one-on-one guidance will help you grow at your own pace, with the freedom to focus on what matters most to you behind the lens.
YOUR MENTOR
With over 30 years of experience and a genuine love for the craft, over the years, I've photographed everything from major campaigns to pop stars and royalty, but it’s always been about capturing honest, natural moments that bring a scene or subject to life - and in Umbria there are so many opportunities.
I believe great photography starts with learning to see differently, which is why my mantra is: "It's not what you look at – it's what you see."
Our retreats in beautiful Umbria are all about slowing down and reconnecting with your creativity. I’ll be there to support you, share with you what I’ve learned, and give you the occasional friendly nudge – whether you're looking to sharpen your technique, boost your confidence, or simply see the world with fresh eyes.

A TYPICAL DAY
Although there are no typical days in Umbria, each day is intentionally crafted to inspire creativity, refine your photography skills, and immerse you in the authentic rhythm of Italian life.
The schedule is relaxed and flexible, allowing space for spontaneous moments and artistic exploration.
Even on rainy days, the magic doesn't stop—in fact, unpredictable weather often opens the door to some of the most atmospheric and compelling images you'll capture.
7:30 AM – Morning Light & Breakfast
Ease into the day with fresh coffee, local pastries, and a peaceful breakfast under the soft glow of the morning sun—an ideal moment to gather your thoughts and gear.
9:30 AM – Photography Excursion
We head out for a curated photography adventure—wandering through quiet villages, hidden gardens, and off-the-beaten-path gems. With our small group, there's time to linger, experiment, and receive personal guidance.
1:00 PM – Lunch Like a Local
We pause for a relaxed lunch at a local trattoria, enjoying simple, regional dishes and good conversation—refueling body and spirit.
3:00 PM – Studio Workshop
Unless we are on an extended excursion, afternoons are for creative editing and post-production back at the studio. Through guided instruction and open discussion, you'll refine your workflow and bring your images to life—no matter your experience level.
7:30 PM – Dinner Together
Evenings are spent sharing a meal—sometimes home-cooked at Casa Susanna, other times at a favorite local spot. It’s always intimate, flavourful, and full of laughter.
Evening – Optional Night Photography
After dark, join an optional night shoot or unwind in quiet reflection—celebrating the day’s creative moments under the stars.
